"Two hundred years of American technique has unwittingly created a massive cement playground of unlimited potential, but it was the minds of eleven year olds that could see that potential"

Sometimes I have to pinch myself, this place is so beautiful.

"Eat Food. These days this is easier said than done, especially when seventeen thousand new products show up in the supermarket each year, all vying for your food dollar. But most of these items don’t deserve to be called food – I call them edible food-like substances. They’re highly processed concoctions designed by food scientists, consisting mostly of ingredients derived from corn and soy that no normal person keeps in the pantry, and they contain chemical additives with which the human body has not been long acquainted. Today much of the challenge of eating well comes down to choosing real food and avoiding these industrial novelties."

Michael Pollan Food Rules - Food Rule #1 (via heartmindspirit)

This quote is actually what I use in my head to figure out whether I want to buy/consume something. I look at the label and then, if it’s freaky I can hear the voice in my head say, that’s not food, it’s just a food-like substance. And I no longer want to eat it, because I know it’s not really food. It’s more like, say, the sweet little cupcake your niece makes you out of play-doh. Adorable but not for eating.

Another reason I like this quote is that it’s easily transmissible. I was able to explain the phrase “food-like substance” to my daughter and she understood it right away and it clicked into her brain quite visibly. And she uses it herself now. Parenting WIN!
